The Allure of Sapphires

ring 1

September is a month synonymous with sapphires. Rich in history, mystery, and beauty, this gemstone has captivated royalty, artists and collectors for centuries. At Sifani, sapphires hold a special place in our story too especially since Sri Lanka, our home, is one of the world’s most celebrated sources of these dazzling stones.

A glimpse into history

Sapphires have been admired since ancient times. The word sapphire is believed to derive from the Greek sappheiros, meaning “blue stone.” Throughout history, they’ve symbolized wisdom, loyalty and divine favor. Kings and queens wore sapphires as protective talismans, while clergy adorned themselves with the stone to signify purity and truth. Perhaps most famously, sapphires have been set in royal engagement rings and crowns.

Interesting Facts About Sapphires

While the deep royal blue is most iconic, sapphires come in a rainbow of colours like pink, yellow, green, purple and even colour-changing varieties. The only shade excluded is red, which is classified as ruby.

Sapphires score a 9 on the Mohs scale, making them one of the hardest gemstones after diamonds, perfect for everyday wear.

Ancient Persians believed the earth rested on a giant sapphire, and its reflection gave the sky its blue colour.

Star sapphires: Some stones display a rare star-like effect known as asterism, making them especially prized by collectors.

Sapphires in today’s world

Sapphires remain one of the most sought after gemstones for engagement rings, statement pendants and heirloom pieces. Their durability ensures they can be passed down for generations, while their versatility makes them suitable for both modern and traditional designs.

In fashion, sapphires are adored for their striking presence. They pair beautifully with white gold, platinum and diamonds, making them a sophisticated choice for both everyday elegance and red-carpet glamour.

Sri Lanka - The island of sapphires

Sri Lanka, once known as Serendib or the Island of Gems, has been famed for sapphires for over 2,500 years. The island’s sapphires are celebrated for their vivid hues, exceptional clarity, and unparalleled brilliance. Some of the world’s most legendary sapphires ,  including pieces housed in royal collections , trace their origins back to Sri Lankan mines.

At Sifani, we continue this proud legacy, carefully selecting and crafting sapphires into jewellery that celebrate both heritage and modern design.
